Chapter 13

“Get out of my trash!” the man croaks.

I dare to peek over my shoulder. He’s old and small, nothing like the shadow would have me believe. Whew.

“I’m sorry.” I swiftly pick up my broom. I then set the trash can back up and go to work at picking up some of the disgusting mess, beginning with the banana peel still adorning Sebastian.

“Leave it be.” The man waves his arms. “Scat!”

I obey with my heart ramming against my ribs, because, let’s face it, a croaky old man chasing you off his lawn can creep anyone out at any age.

As I head down the cracked sidewalk, broom in hand and Sebastian keeping pace, the man mutters, “Filthy bums always scattering my trash.”

The night seems darker on this side of town, the shadows longer. A chill in the air nips the back of my shoulders, or maybe that’s fear. If only I could switch into my cat form right now. It would be super convenient.

I peer at the next home’s address, looking for 77 West 7th street. It was so easy to remember that I didn’t need it written down. This one is numbered 73. The sound of a man and woman fighting draws me to their silhouettes in the kitchen window. They make heated gestures, the woman screaming at him about poker night, the man yelling back at her about “lazying around the house.”

A baby doll lies within their low chain-link perimeter, her head about three feet from the dirty body. I spot a couple of other broken-down toys in the yard and feel sorrow for the children who live there.

We continue on. Across the street, a shadowy figure emerges from between two tall hedges. It makes me think of Michael Meyers. Yes, I have seen all of the Halloween horror movies. As it always feels like Halloween around Wildes and Nightshade, you can imagine why I love scary movies. Thankfully the stranger keeps going, hands in pockets, minding his own business.

77 West 7th Street comes clearly into view. The first thing that grabs my attention is the fact that the house doesn’t look rundown. It’s a humble abode in its small size, probably just a two-bedroom house, but the wood siding is clean and bright in the moonlight, appearing newly painted. The yard isn’t patchy and actually has some curb appeal. There’s no ghetto chain-link fencing. Instead it’s black wrought iron and has an intricately designed gate to match.

“This is a welcome sight,” I say to Sebastian, who has stopped at my feet to take it all in with me. “Not as creepy, you know.”

“If you say so,” Sebastian replies, obviously unconvinced.

Car wheels crunching gravel capture my attention, and I turn to see a dark sedan parking a couple of houses back. I return my focus to house number 77. A light is on in the living room, the TV’s glow flickering with the changing scenes, and it’s at this moment that I realize I’m about to question someone who is most likely the murderer.
